Response
This query was referred to the NCCH who provided the following advice:
"ACS 1904 PROCEDURAL COMPLICATIONS is currently being reviewed for a future edition of ACS as part of a public submission. The issue of whether misadventures should be coded if they don't meet the criteria for an additional diagnosis will be clarified as a result of this process, following consultation with the Australian Commission on Safety & Quality in Health Care.
Given this will potentially be a change in practice for many coders the NCCH advises that in the interim the current guidelines in ACS 1904 PROCEDURAL COMPLICATIONS and ACS 0002 ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSES should be followed".
In view of the NCCH response, the VICC cannot provide a definitive response and therefore advises coders to apply ACS 0002 Additional diagnoses and (then) ACS 1904 Procedural complications.
