Additional diagnoses for adjustment, management, fitting or removal of VAD, VC or DDD sameday admissions

Publication Date: December 2010

ICD 10 AM Edition: Sixth edition

Retired Date: 30/6/2015

Query Number: 2547

I refer to VICC Queries #2127 Coding of cancer with insertion/removal infusaport, #2148 Insertion and removal of infusaport, #1958 ACS 0236 Neoplasm coding and sequencing and # 2433 Chemotherapy.

I wish to obtain clarification on the assignment of additional diagnoses for same day admissions for the adjustment, management, fitting or removal of vascular access devices (VAD), venous catheters (VC) and drug delivery devices (DDD). Do such same day admissions require the assignment of neoplasm or non-neoplastic codes as additonal diagnoses?

Response

The VICC advises that the responses to all the queries cited in this query have been superseded by the advice article titled Vascular Access Devices, Venous Catheters And Drug Delivery Devices published in Coding Matters Volume 15 Number 1 June 2008.

Therefore, only assign additional diagnoses for same day admissions for the adjustment, management, fitting or removal of vascular access devices (VAD), venous catheters (VC) and drug delivery devices (DDD) if the condition meets ACS 0002 Additional diagnoses.
