ACS 0401 1 July 2012 changes

Publication Date: September 2012

ICD 10 AM Edition: Seventh edition

Retired Date: 30/6/2017

Query Number: 2726

This query is just for the new diabetes coding rules from July 1 2012. Do we have to code out diabetes for dialysis patients? This would affect all the autocoding done across the country.

Response

In accordance with advice in the ACS 0401 Diabetes mellitus and intermediate hyperglycaemia – 2012 Education Workshop FAQs, 15 June 2012, question 9 Diabetes mellitus and day only admissions, the NCCC recognises the limitations of autogenerated software in terms of assigning additional diagnosis codes for specific patients and accepts
that for now, that it will not be possible for many hospitals to comply with ACS 0001 Principal diagnosis, Problems and underlying conditions and ACS 0002 Additional diagnoses for these episodes.

Therefore VICC advises that if you currently autocode dialysis, continue to do so.
