Publication Date: December 2014
ICD 10 AM Edition: Eighth edition

We note your advice to assign S30.1 as the principal diagnosis in this situation following the index entry Haematoma (see also Contusion).
Noting that a haematoma is an encapsulated haemorrhage and endeavouring to show the non-traumatic nature of the condition we have been assigning M62.88 as the PDx for this condition following the index entry
Haemorrhage
- muscle M62.8-
There is a DRG variance between S30.1 and M62.88 as the PDx. Your advice on the regarding choice of code is appreciated.

Response
VICC advises that the terms haemorrhage and haematoma are not interchangeable in the classification. Also, the lead term Haematoma has a 'see also' note for contusion (not haemorrhage). Consequently the Index entry Haemorrhage/muscle M62.8- cannot be followed for documentation of rectus sheath haematoma. Therefore VICC maintains that the correct code is S30.1 Contusion of abdominal wall.
