Incomplete colonoscopy due to poor bowel preparation
Publication Date: September 2017
ICD 10 AM Edition: Tenth edition
Query Number: 3235
How can we capture poor bowel preparation which results in the patient having an unsatisfactory colonoscopy? This often requires the patient to:
- have a CT colonoscopy and/or stay overnight for further bowel preparation for this radiological procedure.
- be readmitted for bowel preparation and repeat scope at a later date.
This seems to appear regularly where there is no other condition (e.g. tortuous bowel) present.

Response
VICC advises that no diagnosis code can be assigned for documentation of poor bowel preparation.
If the procedure is interrupted or shortened due to the poor bowel preparation the procedure should be coded to the extent to which it was performed.
If the procedure was cancelled due to poor bowel preparation, and the admission meets criteria for reporting, then a code from Z53.- Persons encountering health services for specific procedures, not carried out can be assigned.
