Coding Rule Q3321
Response
VICC advises the correct code to assign for documentation of fungal tongue infection not otherwise specified is B37.0 Candidal stomatitis following Index entry Mycosis, mycotic/mouth.
This is consistent with the logic in IHPA Coding Rule Q3321 Fungal pneumonia which advises ‘Fungal infections are classified in ICD-10-AM to category B35–B49 Mycoses’ and to follow lead term Mycosis for fungal infection.
As B37.0 Candidal stomatitis captures both the site and the infection, VICC advises only one code is required for documentation of fungal tongue infection. This is supported by IHPA Coding Rule TN196 Candida urinary tract infection (UTI) where only one code is assigned for candida UTI.
You may wish to make a public submission to IHPA to improve the classification of fungal tongue infection.
